Georgia Tech hosts the sixth biannual Digital Games Research Association Conference, August 26-29, 2013, at the Georgian Terrance Hotel.
THEME: DEFRAGGING GAME STUDIES
This year’s proposed theme is a playful linguistic remix of the terms “frag” and “defrag.” Defragging is the computer term for reducing file fragmentation. Fragging, derived from the military term for killing a superior officer of one’s own unit, has become video game parlance for the temporary killing of another player.
In the early game studies community, a good deal of fragging (in all three senses) took place between various camps, schools of thought and disciplines. This included discussions as to whether or not game studies should split into more discipline-centered communities; however, the overall trend has been to continue to grow our field as an “interdiscipline” that includes humanities, social sciences and psychology, computer science, design studies, and fine arts.
Borrowing from the computer engineering term, the theme for DiGRA 2013 highlights this process of defragmenting, which both embraces and better articulates our diverse methods and perspectives while allowing the game studies research community to remain a coherent and unified whole.

Museum of Design Atlanta
Offering what is sure to be another popular and engaging summer exhibition, the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) in partnership with Georgia Tech is pleased to announce an interactive show highlighting the work of women game designers and artists titled “XYZ: Alternative Voices in Game Design.” “XYZ” seeks to challenge the misperception that women neither play nor create video games. The exhibition opens July 12 and runs through September 1, 2013.
Museum visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the interactive aspects of the exhibition. For art and design connoisseurs, “XYZ” provides a diverse and expansive picture of the art of game design, and offers even seasoned gamers new insights into what games are and can be. The show will include not only familiar mainstream games, but alternative genres such as art, independent and documentary games. “XYZ” includes a broad spectrum of works representing a legacy of alternative visions that demonstrate the capacity of game design to convey a wide range of ideas, experiences and emotions.
The aim of “XYZ” is to celebrate women’s contributions to the advancement of the video game medium by highlighting their influence and accomplishments. Every piece in the show has been wholly or partially created by women. Today, women comprise only 10 to 15 percent of the gaming industry, and the percentage of those participating in the actual design process is even lower. Nevertheless, women continue to serve as major creative influences in the mainstream video game industry as well as in alternative genres.

Celia Pearce is an award-winning game designer, author, researcher, teacher, curator and artist, specializing in multiplayer gaming and virtual worlds, independent, art, and alternative game genres, as well as games and gender. She is currently an Associate Professor of Digital Media in Georgia Tech’s School of Literature, Media and Communication, where she also directs the Experimental Game Lab and the Emergent Game Group. She is the author or co-author of numerous papers and book chapters, as well as The Interactive Book (Macmillan 1997) and Communities of Play: Emergent Cultures in Multiplayer Games and Virtual Worlds (MIT 2009). She is also a member of the GVU.

ParTour: Mobile Storytelling and Bicycles in South L.A.
Can basic cell phones and bicycles help re-imagine the city? This talk analyzes a participatory mapping platform called ParTour. Over the past year, residents have used ParTour to transform their everyday phones into multimedia tools for neighborhood storytelling. Inspired by theories of real-world games, participants map and describe their pictures in real-time (using basic phones, not smartphones). Later, the pictures are used for city planning and turned into paper maps for advocacy. Unlike many mobile projects, the goal is not to generate data, or points-on-a-map. Instead, ParTour seeks to structure civic participation, and invigorate the neighborhood imagination — a kind of urban acupuncture. Mobile media introduces new possibilities to situate storytelling in physical spaces, with implications for place-making and civic engagement.
Benjamin Stokes (@bgstokes, http://benjaminstokes.net) is a researcher at the USC Annenberg School, where he is completing his PhD on informal civic learning and real-world gaming. Research on ParTour is a collaborative effort by the Mobile Urban Mapping team at USC. Previously, Benjamin served at the MacArthur Foundation as a program officer in their $50M portfolio on Digital Media and Learning. Benjamin is a co-founder of Games for Change, the branch of the serious games movement which seeks to advance social change. Benjamin has also led design teams on games and e-training, reaching more than 150,000 youth at the nonprofit MercyCorps/NetAid.
Chris Solarski is coming to campus to speak about his new book “Drawing Basics and Video Game Art” on Monday, Oct. 1st 2012 in Clough at 4:15pm, in the 144 auditorium. Additionally Barnes & Noble will have some of his books for sale/signing.
Chris Solarski is originally from England, but currently living in Zurich. The book will be published by the art imprint of Random House on the 1st of October. Its about classical drawing for video game design, and explores the traditional techniques that designers can use in order to create more meaningful and significantly emotional gaming experiences.
